Simple Ways to Find Serenity in a Strenuous World

No matter who you are or where you're from (cue Backstreet Boys song hehe), you have probably been burnt out or stressed out at some point in your life. The American lifestyle is all about "go go go" and "hustle hustle hustle". Don't get me wrong, I do believe there are a time and place for those stages in life, but it shouldn't be that way 100% of the time. However, for most of us, it's our daily reality where we live for the weekends. Even then, some of us might still have to work on the weekends and those aren't exactly restorative and restful either.Let's take a glimpse at four quick tactics to hopefully add more serenity into your daily life. Especially if you can't escape for a long period of time to rest and rejuvenate.

Go for a Walk

By going for a walk out in the open air, regardless of whether it's raining or not, you've got that time away from everyone to gather your thoughts. Nowadays, we don't have the opportunity to think about our next plan of action. It's important to take this opportunity to go out, and the act of walking itself is incredibly therapeutic. It gives you the opportunity to process thoughts, but it also gives you the cardiovascular exercise your body needs. Some people prefer to listen to music, a podcast, or an audiobook on their walks. However, most times I prefer to just listen to my surroundings and be completely present. You never know what you'll pick up when you're observant!

Find a Space for You

You don't have to go far, you can venture into your garden, and find a nice corner that is away from everything, so you can sit down, relax and think for 10 minutes. If you have a busy household, and you can't find anywhere to relax, there are so many garden sheds that are impenetrable, that you can put one at the end of your garden, sit down, and lock the door. Put a couple of earplugs in, and breathe! It may sound extreme, but if you don't have the opportunity to get peace and quiet, you need to make it.Preferably, especially if you're a Mom of littles, it might be best to do something like this once your hubby comes home or the kids are down for a nap. Just sayin'! :)

Practice Coping Skills

We get stressed because we have an inability to cope. So, by learning effective coping skills, such as meditation or mindfulness, or even basic breathing patterns, you are going to have control over your autonomic nervous system. My favorite way of coping is to pray. I pray for the Lord to quiet my heart and focus on Him instead of my circumstances. I find once I put the focus back on God, my eyes are steady on Him instead of being frantic. As a result, you are going to feel calmer and have a healthy outlet for that stress.

Plan Everything the Night Before

If you feel like life is getting out of control, this is probably the reason you feel stressed. By putting a bit more structure into your life, you will feel much more in control of your surroundings. The first thing to do when you have a busy day ahead of you is to start the night before. Lay everything out, from your clothes to your lunch, and you will sleep better. And on the topic of sleeping better, put that phone away. If you feel stressed, the cortisol raising blue light is not going to help. If you don't have a sense of structure in your life, this could contribute to your feelings of anxiety.
